THOUGHTS FROM DOUG
There have been 22 years between the last tech bubble (1999) and current tech bubble (2021). Will it be another 22 years before silly money is again thrown at silly things?
Sweden just discovered they have rare earth minerals needed for EVs and windmills. The hope is this will reduce dependency on China and curtail its rare earth dominance. This is great news, except it is supposed to take 15 years for miners to get the permits to start production. Fifteen years!!! The lunacy of man-made bureaucracy.
Yesterday a good friend sent me a photo of the sign in front of Khyber Grill, an Indian restaurant on Richmond Ave in Houston. It read: “Without freedom of speech, how would we know who the idiots are?” Indian immigrants speak their minds.
When we think the world is all stressed out, upside down, inside out, and doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, we should probably realize this isn’t the first time in history such a feeling has existed. There is no progress without adversity.
A soft landing seems to be the consensus view of the impending recession. But given December’s retail sales and industrial production numbers, maybe we’ve already landed on that down comforter.
As inflation continues to fall, it confirms that all inflation is transitory. And if the global economy continues to struggle, we may soon see headlines about a deflation crisis. One investment bank thinks that’s going to happen.
Inflation is always transitory. Growth is also transitory. Recessions are, too. Everything is transitory.
The saying “everyone is entitled to their own opinion” seems to have originated in 1946. I don’t think its originator envisioned that everyone’s own opinion could be blasted globally, every single minute of every single day.
Maybe the new saying should be: Keep your opinions to yourself…online.
In case you didn’t know:
We have a climate crisis. We have a housing crisis. We have a homeless crisis. We have a healthcare crisis. We have an opioid crisis. We have a democracy crisis. We have an education crisis. We have a global debt crisis. We have an income gap and inequality crisis. We have a gender crisis. We have a children’s mental health crisis. We have an overall mental health crisis. We have a psychiatric drug crisis. We have an obesity crisis. And, after the last election, we now have a federal debt ceiling crisis.
Feeling better now?
